Imagining the meaning
Unit 1 –Art and Design
Project Proposal and Presentation
Review
During my time on the Foundation Diploma, I feel it has not only
expanded my creative knowledge In all 3 of the creative choices I chose (Visual
communication, Fashion and Surface Design and Photo Media) but it has also
helped me adapt how I work and view art as a visual communicator. Reflecting on
my previous option groups and experiencing the book and Cube programme project
in the visual communication area, I decided that this was the pathway I would
like to follow. The options I explored helped me discover a wide range of
processes, allowing me to gain Photoshop skills, camera knowledge and improve
hand drawn image in life drawing, which I can now successfully work with and
hope to further explore. Over all 3 options the process that stuck with me most
was the ‘random word’ brief we were given. I feel due to the spontaneous word
choices and short time period, these allowed me to work with more freedom and
produce more original work creating images from just one word.
Project Concept
Therefore for my Final Major Project I intend to create a
body of work that focuses on the response to randomly generated words, through
the means of Illustration. In order to keep the works as unrestrictive and
prescriptive as possible, I am going to employ my 5-year-old sister to generate
them for me. I often read stories to her, particularly from the Roald Dahl book
Collection, but she frequently stops me when she doesn’t understand what
certain words or sayings mean. It is these words and sayings that I am hoping
to use and illustrate, helping to promote the frequent and unpredictable nature
of sourcing random words- which is what I was looking for. Throughout I shall
conduct wider ranging research to allow me to explore audience, perceptions and
meanings of image together with reviewing work, whilst in pursuit of execution.
For example the work of Mica Angela Hendrix has really helped me recently,
particularly her playful use of line and colour. Through this research,
together with developing knowledge of the Eight Principles of Design, I am
really excited about the development of my project and ultimately finding the
most appropriate way of creating the final outcomes To help me through this
development I may treat each word almost as a separate project, allowing for a
full and specific exploration before using another word. However I will have to
be careful if I choose to do this, as I need to be aware of ensuring all
outcomes sit together as one body of work. I’m not sure yet how this project
will ultimately translate, but I’m looking forward to the whole process and
documenting fully as I go.
Evaluation
Throughout my project I will continuously evaluate my
progress and the development through analytical reflection. I will manage my time effectively in order to
create a substitution and meaningful body of work by the deadline’s will also
undertake regular 1 to 1 tutorials and reviews to allow me to make the most
informed choices when making decisions.
